Newborn Essentials I Actually Used (And What I Skipped)
There is no shortage of baby product lists on the internet. Most of them will have you filling a cart with things that end up shoved in a closet by week three. I know, because I've been there — three times.
After three newborns, years of trial and error, and more Amazon returns than I care to admit, I've narrowed it down to the items that genuinely made those early weeks feel more manageable. Not easier exactly — newborn life is what it is — but calmer, more organized, and a little less chaotic.
This isn't a list of everything you could buy. It's the list of what I actually reached for, recommended to my friends, and would buy again without hesitation. I've also included a few things I'd skip — because that's just as useful.
The Sleep Setup
Sleep is everything in the newborn stage. For you and for baby. Getting the environment right makes a meaningful difference.
Sound Machine
A good sound machine does two things: it signals to your baby that it's time to rest, and it drowns out the inevitable household noise that would otherwise wake them. We've used the Hatch Baby Sound Machine since our first, and it's still going strong. What I love about the Hatch specifically is that it also functions as a nightlight and you can control it from your phone — which means you never have to fumble with buttons during a 3am feed. Worth every penny.
Blackout Shades
Non-negotiable. Babies are not wired to understand that daylight saving time means they should sleep in. Blackout shades fix that. We use the portable suction blackout shades and genuinely love them — they go up and come down easily, work on any window, and travel with us. My now-3-year-old still sleeps with them. If you're looking at a permanent bedroom solution, these work beautifully as a temporary fix while you figure out what you actually want long-term.
Swaddles
Newborns have opinions, and you will not know your baby's swaddle preference until they are here and you are sleep deprived and standing in their nursery at 2am trying seventeen different techniques. My advice: start with one type, see if they like it, then stock up. We loved the Ollie Swaddle — it's adjustable as baby grows, breathable, and easy to use when your brain is running on fumes. All three of our babies took to the same brand, which I still consider a miracle.
Getting Dressed Without Losing Your Mind
Magnetic Onesies
I did not know I needed these until I had them, and now I evangelize them to every pregnant person I know. Becoming a mom unlocked fears I never knew I had — including accidentally zipping my newborn's skin in the zipper of a regular onesie at midnight. Magnetic closures eliminate that entirely. Magnetic Me is the gold standard. They're soft, the magnets are strong, and they align intuitively even when you're operating on three hours of sleep. Worth the investment for the first few months especially.
Fragrance Free Laundry Detergent
Newborn skin is sensitive in a way that will surprise you. We tried a few options before switching to Attitude Fragrance Free Detergent and honestly ended up switching our whole family over to it — not just baby's clothes. It's clean, effective, and EWG-certified, which matters to me. If you're already on a low-tox journey at home, this is an easy and important swap.
Diaper Changes (Simplified)
Diaper Caddy
This is one of those items that sounds unnecessary until you realize you've walked up and down the stairs seventeen times before noon looking for wipes. Get two diaper caddies — one for upstairs and one for downstairs. Each one should have: diapers in the right size, wipes, diaper cream, and a change of clothes. That's it. Everything you need, wherever you are. This one small system saves so much mental energy.
Diaper Rash Cream
We went through several brands before landing onTriple Paste. It's thick, effective, and actually works on contact. I keep it in every caddy and have a backup in the cabinet. If your baby ever gets a bad rash, you will want this on hand before it happens, not after.
The Items That Buy You Sanity
Baby Lounger
A safe, simple place to set baby down that can move with you room to room is more valuable than it sounds. The Snuggle Me Lounger was our go-to — it's designed to gently hug baby on the sides which helps them feel held even when you need two hands to make breakfast or fold laundry. Important note: this is for supervised lounging only, not for unsupervised sleep.
Baby Carrier
A carrier that actually works changes your life. Wearing baby keeps them calm and gives you your hands back — which in the newborn stage is everything. We loved the Solly Baby Wrap for the early weeks (incredibly soft, great for tiny newborns) and transitioned to a structured carrier around 3-4 months. The wrap has a bit of a learning curve but once you've got it, it's second nature. Budget option: the Moby Wrap does the same job at a lower price point.
White Noise Machine for Parents
Okay this one is for you, not baby. If baby is in a separate room or you're trying to sleep through the monitor noise, having your own white noise helps. We used a simple LectroFan on our nightstand and it genuinely helped us fall back asleep faster between feeds.
If you're already thinking about creating a healthier environment for your little one from day one, my easy low-tox swaps post covers the most important changes to make at home — including fragrance-free laundry detergent for washing all those tiny clothes.
Baby Care Basics
Electric Nail Trimmer
Baby nails grow at an alarming rate and are somehow both incredibly soft and razor sharp. The Momcozy Electric Nail Trimmer was a game changer — no risk of catching skin, comes with multiple attachment heads for different ages, and rechargeable. We used ours through toddlerhood. Nail trimming a squirmy toddler is truly an Olympic sport and this tool makes it survivable.
Nose Suction Tool
The Frida Baby NoseFrida is one of those products that sounds alarming in theory and becomes indispensable in practice. When your baby is stuffy and struggling and you would do anything to help them breathe — you will use this without a second thought. Simple, easy to clean, and genuinely effective.
Baby Thermometer
You will need this in the middle of the night and you do not want to be searching Amazon for it at that moment. The Frida Baby Quick-Read Rectal Thermometeris the most accurate option for newborns. For older babies, the Braun Ear Thermometer is faster and easier. Have at least one on hand before baby arrives.
Saline Drops
Pair these with your nose suction tool. A couple drops of saline before suctioning loosens everything up and makes the whole process faster and easier on baby. Simply Saline Baby is what we kept in rotation — inexpensive, effective, and safe from birth.
Feeding Essentials
Nursing Pillow
Whether you're breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or both — a good nursing pillow is one of the most used items in the newborn stage. It props baby at the right angle, takes the weight off your arms, and honestly just makes feeding sessions more sustainable. The Boppy Nursing Pillow is the classic. The My Brest Friend is preferred by many lactation consultants for its flat surface and back support — worth trying if you're breastfeeding and struggling with positioning.
Haakaa Silicone Pump
If you're breastfeeding, put this on your list immediately. The Haakaa Silicone Pump attaches to the opposite breast during feeds and collects letdown passively — no motor, no noise, no effort. It's how I built a freezer stash in the early weeks without adding extra pumping sessions. Inexpensive and wildly effective.
Burp Cloths (More Than You Think)
You will use more burp cloths than you believe possible. We loved the Aden + Anais muslin burp cloths— they're large, soft, absorbent, and get softer with every wash. Buy at least 8-10. Then buy more.
The Luxury Upgrade Worth It
UPPAbaby Vista Stroller
This isn't a must-have, and the price reflects that. But it's one of those investments that we've gotten every bit of our money's worth from over six-plus years across multiple kids. The UPPAbaby Vista navigates beautifully, converts from single to double without buying a new frame, and holds its value well if you ever sell it. Not a runner — I've heard it doesn't perform well for jogging — but for everyday use, errands, and travel it's exceptional.
What I'd Skip
Wipe warmer. Sounds sweet, creates dependency. Hard pass.
Changing table. The floor, a mat on a dresser, or a portable changing pad does the same job. Save the space and the money.
Newborn shoes. They don't walk. They just lose them.
Baby food maker. A regular blender works perfectly fine when you get to that stage. Don't buy the dedicated appliance.
