Non-Toxic Kids Personal Care: What a Mom of 3 Actually Uses

Okay, real talk: the first time I flipped over my oldest's shampoo bottle and actually read the ingredient list, I had a mini meltdown in the Target aisle. Fragrance. Sulfates. A string of ingredients I couldn't pronounce, let alone spell. And this was the "gentle baby wash" I'd been slathering on my kid for two years.

If you've been on this low-tox journey for any amount of time, you know that moment. The one where you realize the products you thought were safe... kind of aren't? It's overwhelming. And it can send you spiraling into a rabbit hole of research at 11pm that does absolutely nothing for your sleep or your sanity.

So I did what I always do — I went slow, I tested things on my own three kids, and I figured out what actually works. This post is a round-up of the non-toxic kids personal care products I genuinely use in our house, why I chose them, and what I ditched along the way. No fluff, no fear-mongering — just honest swaps from a real mom of three.

Why non-toxic kids personal care actually matters

Kids aren't just small adults. Their skin is thinner, their detox pathways are still developing, and they absorb a higher percentage of what goes on their body relative to their size. When we're talking about products used daily — shampoo, lotion, sunscreen, toothpaste — those exposures add up fast.

I'm not here to make you panic. We can't control everything, and I'm definitely not out here reading ingredients on every single thing in our house before 7am. But personal care products are an easy, high-impact place to make a few swaps because you're using them every single day, on your most vulnerable little people.

This is the same philosophy behind our whole low-tox approach — start where it makes sense, make it sustainable, and don't let perfect be the enemy of good. If you're just getting started, my post on Easy Low-Tox Home Swaps to Start With is a great place to begin before going deep on personal care.

Bath time essentials

Bath time products are an easy place to start — they're used daily, in large amounts, on the most sensitive skin in the house.

Shampoo and body wash

After trying way too many options, we landed on Babo Botanicals Moisturizing Baby Shampoo & Wash. It's fragrance-free, free of sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, and it actually lathers well enough that my kids feel like they're getting a real wash. I've used it on all three, including my youngest from newborn. I linked it here on Amazon.

For my older two who have thicker hair and need a little more slip for detangling, we also use Attitude Little Ones Shampoo. It's EWG Verified, smells like a mild pear, and my daughter is obsessed with it. You can grab it here.

Lotion

Our go-to body lotion is California Baby Super Sensitive Cream. It's fragrance-free, gentle enough for eczema-prone skin (my middle kid has had eczema since birth — this has been a game changer), and a little goes a really long way. Linked here.

For a more affordable everyday option, Pipette Baby Lotion is fantastic — made with sugarcane-derived squalane, lightweight, and absorbs quickly.

Diaper cream

We love Earth Mama Organic Diaper Balm for everyday use — organic herbs, non-nano zinc oxide, nothing sketchy.

For bad rash situations, we bring out Triple Paste, which has a higher concentration of zinc oxide and really heals things fast.

Sun and outdoor protection

Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to physically block UV rays. For kids, we stick to mineral-only.

Our everyday sunscreen is Badger Kids Sunscreen SPF 40. It's one of the cleanest formulas out there — a handful of ingredients, all recognizable, certified organic. Does it go on a little white? Yes. Do my kids care? No.

For beach or pool days, we use Thinkbaby Safe Sunscreen SPF 50+. It blends a bit more easily, still mineral-only, still passes the EWG test.

Bug spray

We use Badger Anti-Bug Shake & Spray, made with citronella, cedar, lemongrass, rosemary, and geranium.

If you're thinking about outdoor activities, I also have a roundup of Screen Free Summer Activities For Kids that pairs well with a good bug spray and a sunny afternoon.

What I look for (and avoid)

I look for: short ingredient lists, EWG Verified or a score of 1–2, fragrance-free or essential-oil-scented, non-nano zinc oxide in sunscreens, and certified organic where possible.

I avoid: "fragrance" or "parfum," parabens, sulfates (SLS, SLES), oxybenzone and avobenzone, synthetic dyes, and PEGs and phthalates. This same mindset carries over to our non-toxic bathroom swaps post, if you want to go deeper.

My approach to all of this

I didn't swap everything at once. I replaced products as they ran out, starting with the ones we used most frequently — and gave myself permission to keep using the "not perfect" option mid-bottle if the budget was tight that week.

Progress over time, not a perfect cabinet today. And if you're a new mom figuring out where to even start, our The Non-Toxic Baby Registry: Everything You Actually Need is the post I wish I'd had the first time around. You're doing a great job.
